The Problem

Africa is invisible to the AI revolution.

The AI revolution will determine which nations lead and which peoples are seen. Africa — 1.4 billion people, 60% of the world's uncultivated arable land, the majority of the world's critical minerals — has almost no presence in its foundations.

African data
trains models built elsewhere
African compute
runs on foreign infrastructure
African languages
absent from global AI systems

This is not a technology gap. It is a sovereignty gap. And it compounds with every year it goes unaddressed.

What We Are Building

The full stack.
Africa's own.

Not a single application. The foundational stack itself — built on the continent, for the continent. Each layer funds and enables the next.

Layer 01
Sovereign Compute
Our first deployments use partner infrastructure with African data governance — encryption, residency, and audit controls that we own. We are building toward distributed, solar-powered African compute nodes as capital allows. The governance is ours from day one — the hardware follows.
Layer 02
African Data & Models
In active development: initial dataset curation and model selection underway for isiZulu, isiXhosa, and Setswana across government, health, and agricultural contexts. We are pursuing data partnerships with leading South African universities. These are the contexts global AI systems have never been trained on — and the source of our most defensible moat.
Layer 03
Application Platform
Our roadmap destination: AI tools deployed across the sectors Africa needs most — government, healthcare, agriculture, energy — built on our own sovereign stack. Each Layer 01 and Layer 02 proof point funds and de-risks this layer. We build in sequence; we do not ask anyone to fund a vision before it is proven.
Sovereignty, in our model, is not defined by where the servers are today — it is defined by where governance resides, who controls the data, and who owns the models. Governance is African from day one. Infrastructure follows as capital allows. M-Pesa ran on Safaricom's existing network while it built the financial layer that changed the continent. The value was always in the intelligence, not the pipes.

Why Now

The conditions for African AI sovereignty have never been more favourable.

The institutions that move now will shape the standards, relationships, and architectures that define the ecosystem for decades.

Global investment validating the thesis

Google deployed $1B+ in African digital infrastructure ahead of schedule. Microsoft, Meta, and Cassava Technologies are all actively building today. Every serious player validates the market.

Governments demanding sovereignty

Ghana, Nigeria, Zambia, and Kenya have each rejected foreign data agreements that compromised sovereignty. African governments are not waiting to be served — they are actively demanding infrastructure they can trust.

The ecosystem is forming

2,400+ African AI startups. Masakhane, Lelapa AI, Zindi, InstaDeep — a genuine African research and builder community exists and is growing rapidly.

Standards are still to be set

No African infrastructure company has yet established trusted data formats, governance models, or language benchmarks. We are co-developing these standards with Masakhane and the African Union AI Advisory Council.

Who We Serve

Our first customers are institutions where trust, compliance, and local control are non-negotiable.

Banks & Insurers
Regulated AI inference, fraud detection, credit scoring, and document processing in a POPIA-compliant private environment. Data stays on African soil.
Government & Public Sector
Sovereign AI systems for citizen services, policy analytics, and public data infrastructure. African citizen data governed by African institutions.
Telcos & Large Enterprises
African language NLP, customer service augmentation, and internal knowledge systems — on locally controlled infrastructure, not foreign cloud.
Healthcare & Research
Private AI for clinical decision support, medical imaging, and health data analytics — within strict governance frameworks and on-continent data residency.

The Team

Conviction, context, and the domain knowledge no outsider can buy.

We are building Savanna Technologies from Cape Town — the right base for a company with continental ambitions and deep relationships in the African technology ecosystem.

Founder & CEO
Cape Town · 2026
Led systems implementation programmes for leading South African retailers and enterprises — end-to-end delivery across ERP, supply chain, and digital integration at scale
Founded and scaled an energy storage and battery technology company — from zero to commercial operations before COVID-era market conditions forced wind-down
Founded a technology consulting firm specialising in systems implementation and integrations for major South African retailers — the operational DNA that Savanna Technologies is built on
Strategic architect of Savanna's founding thesis, governance framework, and go-to-market — with the infrastructure and delivery experience to execute what most AI founders only theorise about
Joining the Founding Team
Equity-first · Targeting Q4 2026
Technical Co-founder
Transformer-based NLP and distributed GPU cluster experience — ideally Masakhane or African language model background
Active conversations underway — targeting Q4 2026 close
Co-founder equity: 25–35% · 4-year vest, 1-year cliff
Equity-first; we have the vision, the domain expertise, and the governance. You bring the technical depth.

Sovereign by design. Savanna Technologies is incorporating as a Public Benefit Company with a Sovereignty Council — structurally protecting the mission through every stage of growth.
